When Stillness Becomes Medicine

In a world that glorifies doing, stillness has become a forgotten medicine. In this reflective piece, Coach Lorraine shares how slowing down activates your body’s innate capacity to heal — physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Discover how intentional stillness restores balance, clarity, and the body’s natural rhythm of healing.

A Radical Idea in a Restless World

Somewhere along the way, we learned to measure our worth by what we do — how much we accomplish, how well we serve, how tirelessly we keep going.

But beneath the constant striving, our bodies whisper a quieter truth:
Healing begins when we stop.

Stillness has a way of bringing us home — to breath, to awareness, to the body’s innate intelligence that never stopped working on our behalf. In a culture that glorifies exhaustion, this is nothing short of revolutionary.

The Science of Stillness

Modern research is validating what ancient wisdom has always known: rest is medicine. Studies published in Frontiers in Psychology and the Journal of Behavioral Medicine show that even 10–15 minutes of intentional quiet can lower cortisol levels, balance blood pressure, and improve emotional regulation.

When we pause, the brain’s default mode network activates — the same system linked to creativity, empathy, and insight. In other words, our inner world begins to reorganize itself toward healing the moment we slow down. Physiologists now understand this as a shift into the parasympathetic state — the body’s natural rest-and-repair mode. Here, cells regenerate, digestion and immunity strengthen, and the mind becomes clearer. Doing nothing, it turns out, is deeply productive — but not in the way we’ve been taught to measure.

Science Now Confirms What the Soul Already Knows

Modern research is finally catching up to what ancient traditions have always understood: stillness heals.

  • A 2021 study published in Frontiers in Psychology found that brief periods of intentional rest — even just 10 minutes of quiet — can significantly reduce cortisol levels and restore cognitive performance.
  • Neuroscientists have also identified that during periods of rest or “mind-wandering,” the brain’s default mode network becomes active — the very system linked to creativity, memory consolidation, and emotional regulation.
  • In other words, doing nothing is not doing nothing at all. It’s when the body and brain begin their deepest repair work.
When we pause, we give our nervous system permission to move out of survival mode.
Heart rate slows, digestion improves, immune function strengthens, and clarity returns.

This is the body’s natural wisdom at work — but we have to slow down long enough to hear it.

My Turning Point

After thirty years of military service, I once believed strength meant endurance — pushing harder, staying busy, proving my resilience.

But fatigue, pain, and depletion have a way of demanding attention. It was only when I allowed myself to do nothing — to sit in the quiet, breathe, and feel — that true healing began.
Stillness gave my body space to remember its rhythm.
It gave my heart permission to rest.
And it re-taught my mind the meaning of surrender. That moment became the seed for my Reset, Renew & Reclaim philosophy — that healing isn’t about control; it’s about listening.
An Invitation to Pause

This Thursday, December 18th at 7 PM EST, I’ll be hosting a live virtual workshop:

“The Healing Power of Doing Absolutely Nothing.” This experience isn’t just about more information — it’s about transformation through stillness.
You’ll discover:
  • Why your nervous system can’t heal in overdrive
  • How stillness recalibrates your body’s natural rhythm
  • Simple, restorative practices you can begin immediately
  • A guided moment of deep rest you’ll actually feel
No worksheets. No rushing. Just breath, awareness, and renewal.
Final Thought
Stillness is not the absence of life — it’s the space where life returns.
When we learn to be still, even briefly, we awaken the body’s own medicine. You’ve carried enough.
Let this be the moment you set it down. ✨ Join me this Thursday and experience what happens when stillness becomes medicine. 👉 EVENTBRITE
